Gimble Bellows

Gimbal Expansion Joints are used to absorb angular rotation in any plane, using two pairs of hinges attached to a common floating gimbal ring. This type of construction provides a close control over the movement imposed up on the bellows and also supports the dead weight of the pipe. The wind and shear loads are also taken care of by the gimbal structure. Gimbal bellows joints are designed to absorb the full pressure thrust load of the expansion joint and thus guard the adjacent equipment from damage due to thrust loading.Since gimbal bellows joints are not restricted to a single plane they offer greater flexibility of usage. The gimbal expansion joint is the most reliable expansion joint since it is capable of absorbing angular motion in all the planes. Although single gimbal bellows joint can be used in isolation the most common applications use a pair of gimbal bellows joints to absorb a complex multi-plane motion in a piping system. In adjacent figure Gimbal Expansion Joints are utilized in a pair to absorb the thermal expansion from the two horizontal piping arms. However note that the thermal growth of the vertical leg must be absorbed by the deflection of the horizontal piping.

Hinged Expansion Bellow

Hinged Expansion Bellow are used to absorb angular movement when it occurs in only one plane. They are also called as Angular Expansion Joints or Hinged Bellows. The construction of the hinged bellows consists of two hinges connected by a common hinge pin. These hinges are designed to absorb the full pressure thrust of the expansion joint. In addition they can be designed to support the dead weight of the piping and equipment, wind loads and similar external loads. Since the pressure thrust is absorbed by the joint hinges, only minimal guiding and intermediate anchors are required at each end of the piping system. The bellows reaction force does not act directly up on the anchors. The anchors should be designed to withstand the friction forces at pipe guides, the angular spring rate and friction moment of the hinges.

Universal Expansion Bellows

Universal Expansion Joints consist of two bellows elements joined together by a common spool piece so it is also called as Double Bellows Expansion Joint or Universal Bellows. An Universal Expansion Joint is generally used where more lateral movement is to be absorbed which is beyond the capacity of a single Axial Expansion Joint and when there is a limitation on the amount of lateral forces allowed by the connecting pipe system. The products are capable of absorbing axial movement, lateral deflection and angular rotation or any combination of these. The amount of lateral deflection that can be absorbed by a double bellows expansion joint is directly proportional to the length of the spool piece between the two bellows elements. The amount of axial movement and angular rotation an universal expansion joint can absorbs depends on the characteristic of the elements such as ply thickness, number of plies, number of convolutions, pitch of convolutions, depth of convolutions, material of construction of the bellows elements etc. When internally pressurized, universal bellows exerts a thrust force on the anchors adjacent equipments as a result of pressure. In this type of expansion joint force is equal to the mean effective area of the bellows times the internal pressure. As there are no tie rods in this expansion joints to absorb the pressure thrust it must be entirely absorbed by the anchors. So the anchors must be sufficiently designed to withstand the full thrust forces. Due to lack of tie rods and the nature of these joints to impose the thrust loads on the anchors, double expansion joints are mainly restricted to low or moderate operating pressure applications.
